Would You Hire or Fire Yourself?

by Adam on April 11, 2009

Seriously – think on that question at the end of each week (or at the end of each day) that you put the effort into building your business…

Whether you’re in business as a company director, a sole trader, or a work at home mom or pop or budding entrepreneur trying to start something up, this is a question that can help you develop the effectiveness of the greatest Little Big Difference of them all – YOU.Let’s face it: when you move away from working for someone else’s business towards building your own, it’s easy to leave one important success ingredient behind at that vacant desk you resigned from…

…ACCOUNTABILITY.

Unless your boss was a completely blinkered imbecile (yes – I know there are plenty of them about) you’ll at least have had to show some reasons for having him/her pay you each month for what you brought to their table.

So – now that your system for accountability has changed, are you still making sure the actions you take are in the directions you want your business to move in?…

When you work for yourself it’s very easy to lose site of the trees for the woods around you. It’s very easy to deceive yourself that the actions you’re taking are moving you the right way. It’s very easy to spend 2 hours on a web site or forum and categorize it as ‘working’ ;)

I can tell you damn straight that there are many days, weeks and months when I should have been fired by a canon from running my business let alone by a boss.

And not necessarily for not working ‘hard enough’ – more importantly for not working smart enough on the things that needed to be done first in order to move the business towards the results I wanted it to generate.

But not anymore.

Now each night I review what I’ve brought to the business as a result of the actions I’ve taken. And I do it honestly. Self-deception is not allowed (unless you’re certified schizophrenic).

You can ask yourself that same question: “would I hire me or fire me?”

Use it to help you focus on what needs to get done to get moving. Start being completely accountable as the greatest Little Big Difference to your success.

Note: chances are the next posts will be written by my successor after I fire myself this evening :)
